This is a question we get asked a lot both in the Computershop and online. It is a difficult question to answer as they are around 90% the same depending on their version numbers. For instance, HDMI 2.0 Offers UHD resolution (Ultra High Resolution) also known more commonly as 4K. Similarly the equivalent Display Port 1.2 offers the same but with slightly faster bandwidth.
We are now on to 8K capable versions of both solutions, HDMI 2.1 and Display Port 2 which again are very similar but ultimately display port appears to come out on top regarding performance. Whereas HDMI is still more compatible with most displays.
What to be aware of
One of the biggest “trip ups” regarding modern display connections is the mismatch between compatibility and adaptation:
Let’s say you purchased a new Graphics card which has Display port output only and you wanted to connect it to your HDMI monitor. This would work using an adapter, (however you will lose a significant amount of quality depending on the adapter.)
Now, let’s say you purchased a new Graphics card which has HDMI output only and you wanted to connect it to your existing display port monitor. This would NOT work with the simple plug-in adaptors. Many people have been caught out by this.
